You will need a provisional driving licence. These are issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency ( DVLA ) and you can apply up to 3 months before your 17th birthday. You will need to complete a form D1 which you can obtain at any post office or order free online.
You must be able to read in good daylight, with glasses or contact lenses at a distance of 20.5 metres, about 67 feet.
Before committing yourself to an instructor, it would be advisable to first check that he or she is fully qualified.
